Update : TOME Beta 0.2 : Tinkerers
Update : Tome Beta 0.2 : Tinkerers
What is available in this release?
Get started
The Tome 0.2 is not a big update feature-wise, but it is was a necessary stepping stone to bigger updates later. It contains roughly the same updates as the Lore 0.2.
The invisible things
First of all, we’ve made it so future updates will never break your files. Given how ambitious some future features are, this requires a very solid migration system. This system existed before, but has now been significantly improved.
Another thing we’ve done, which was vital, is improving our bug-squashing abilities. We’ve implemented new error messages, new tests, and other little things, so that future updates are more stable, faster.
Finally, we’ve improved a few things left and right to prepare ourselves for what comes next. This includes the Launcher, which has underwent some changes and should be more stable and more informative.
The visible things
We’ve improved the UI in sundry ways, based on our observations about how things were used in 0.1:
1. Big changes to the image system
The inventory has been completely reworked. Although it still requires some things to be where we want it to be, we believe it to be significantly better and more enjoyable to work with as is.
You can now select images more easily, insert them from a pop-up instead of from the palette, search through them, order them by name or by import time, and see them in a pop-up. You are now warned before deleting them. The inventory now has its own separate little tab for ease of use.
Future improvements will include the ability to crop them better in the page context, and the ability to move them to another folder.
2. Generic UI improvements
It is now possible to reorder tabs. This was a big issue with the previous version for many of you, and we’re glad it’s finally in!
The way you can adjust your text has also been improved, and you can now edit your text without having the palette open like so:
Menus are now much nicer and more polished:
Overall, many little improvements have been made to the sidebar, topbar, palette, and more. We hope you will find all of it more polished and enjoy the improved quality of life.
We’ve also renamed a few things, including naming Lore files and Tome files “Lory” and “Tomy”, respectively, as well as changing the name of indexes to “memos”. We’re very curious about the community opinion on this.
3. Ratios
A unique addition to Tome is that the ratios of elements is now maintained when resizing the window, like it is in Lore. This will make future features like cropping pictures much more consistent. This is part of a wider effort to make your experience less dependent on your window size.
The future
β0.3 has already been fully designed and is in development. In general, you can assume future updates will mostly work like the series of two updates we just had: one update adds big features, one update focuses on polish. We believe this is a good cycle to have, as it lets us polish things up properly. It’s important to have features, but the path to ease of use and quality of life are also long and arduous, and require just as much attention.
